National Children's Month

National Children's Month

The spotlight of this year’s National Children’s Month is on the online world which has become increasingly dangerous for children. It is a fact the technological world is entering the daily lives of kids; thus, every child that is caught up in this world is a potential victim of exploitation and abuse. This year's theme, "OSAEC-CSAEM Wakasan: Kaligtasan at Karapatan ng Bata, Ipaglaban!", calls for everyone's participation in the struggle for the protection of the safety, dignity, and rights of every Filipino child. It emphasizes that every child must not only survive through but also prosper without any form of harm, either online or offline.

The government is putting up a spirited fight against these crimes via its various agencies such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC), and the Department of Justice (DOJ). Among these, the major law, Republic Act No. 11930, known as the Anti-Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children Law, plays a pivotal role in making children in the online world less exposed to the risk of predation. Not only does this piece of legislation deter the offenders in the first place, but it also ensures that the victims are given the appropriate medical, psychological, social, and legal care, rehabilitation, and support. The government is also working together with the organizations and communities to create awareness and to promote responsible digital use.

Nevertheless, the battle is still a long one even if the initiatives are praiseworthy. Online exploitation of a number of children still happens because of reasons such as economic difficulties, ignorance, and poorly functioning monitoring systems. It is imperative that the government not only continues the deployment of safety measures on the internet but also supports it with law enforcement that is effective and at the same time educates the digital literacy of the parents and kids. Protecting children should be the concern of families, schools, and communities and not only a government responsibility.

To sum up, the celebration of National Children's Month in 2025 will be a signal that children's safety and  dignity are still paramount. To eliminate OSAEC and CSAEM, it takes people working as one, being alert, and showing kindness. Together, we have the power to change the situation and make it one where every child in the Philippines can be safe, have their rights, and develop their abilities to the fullest.
